What we do
Pruning is the cheapest tree work you'll ever pay for.
A tree pruned properly every few years rarely becomes the tree that has to come out. Integrity Tree Specialist was founded by Alexander Shield on a simple idea: tell people the truth about their trees, and do the work that keeps them standing.
Good pruning is subtraction with a purpose. We take out what's dead, broken, rubbing, crowding the centre or hanging where it shouldn't be — and we leave the branches doing the work of holding the tree up. Every cut is made at the branch collar so the wound seals instead of rotting inward.
What we don't do is top trees. Cutting a crown back to stubs is the fastest way to create weak regrowth, decay pockets and a much bigger bill in five years. If someone quotes you that, get a second opinion.

"Trim my tree" can mean six different things. Here's what we'd actually be doing, and what each one is for.
Crown thinning
Selective removal of crowded interior growth so light and wind pass through the canopy instead of pushing against it. Reduces sail effect before storm season without changing the tree's shape.
Crown raising
Lower limbs lifted to clear head height over walkways, driveways and lawns. Gets the mower under it, gets the delivery truck past it, and lets grass grow where it's been too shaded to.
Clearance pruning
Branches pulled back off your roof, gutters, siding, fence and shed. Stops squirrels using the tree as a bridge and stops wet limbs scrubbing shingles every time it blows.
Structural & young tree pruning
Training a young tree to one strong leader and well-spaced limbs. Ten minutes of cuts now prevents the co-dominant split that takes half the tree off in fifteen years.

We come out and read the tree
Free, no obligation. We look at species, health, structure and what's around it, then tell you which type of pruning it actually needs — and how much of the crown can safely come off. If the answer is "nothing this year", that's what you'll hear.

The plan gets agreed out loud
We walk the tree with you and point at the branches coming off, so nobody's surprised by the shape at the end. Beds, furniture and vehicles get moved clear, and drop zones are set under the work.

Climbed, not spiked — and cut at the collar
Our climbers work on rope and saddle, never spikes on a tree that's staying. Each cut is made just outside the branch collar so the tree can seal the wound itself, and we stay inside safe limits rather than stripping the canopy bare.

Chipped, cleaned and walked with you
Brush chipped, limbs loaded out, beds and lawn blown clean. Then we walk it with you from the ground and from the street, so you can see the shape from where you'll actually be looking at it.

Bad pruning doesn't look bad straight away — it looks bad two summers later, when the stub has rotted and the regrowth is a thicket of weak shoots. That's why we prune to accepted arborist practice rather than to whatever's quickest with a pole saw.
Our climbers are trained on rigging, aerial rescue and proper cut placement. We work off rope and saddle so we're not driving spikes into a tree that's staying, we sanitise between trees when disease is in play, and we're fully insured — happy to send the certificate before we start. Larger canopies get the crane or bucket when that's the safer way to reach them.

Before you book a pruning
How much does tree pruning cost in Chesapeake?
It depends on the height of the tree, how much is coming off, and how easy it is to get to. A small ornamental in the front yard is a different job from a mature oak over the roof. The estimate is free and done in person, and you get one written price covering the pruning and the cleanup before anything starts.
What's the best time of year to prune?
Late winter into early spring is ideal for most hardwoods here — the structure is visible with the leaves off and the tree heals fast once it wakes up. That said, dead, broken or hazardous limbs come off whenever you spot them, and clearance work over a roof doesn't need to wait for a season. Some species, like oaks and certain flowering trees, have timing worth planning around, and we'll flag that at the estimate.
How much can you take off without hurting the tree?
Less than most people expect. As a general rule we stay well under a quarter of the living canopy in one visit, and less than that on older or stressed trees. Leaves are how a tree feeds itself — strip too many and you get a stressed tree throwing weak water sprouts. If your goal needs more than one visit's worth of pruning, we'll stage it over a couple of seasons.
Will you top my tree to make it shorter?
No. Topping cuts a crown back to stubs, which decay inward and push out dense, weakly attached regrowth that fails in the next big blow. If a tree genuinely is too tall for its spot, the honest options are a proper crown reduction back to suitable growth points, or removal and replanting with something that fits. We'll walk you through both.
Do you clean up all the branches?
Yes, and it's included in the quoted price. Brush is chipped on site, limbs are loaded out, and beds, lawn and driveway are blown clean before we leave. If you want the chips left for mulch or the wood cut to firewood lengths and stacked, just say so — we'll do that instead at no extra charge.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Integrity Tree Specialist carries general liability and workers' compensation coverage, and we'll provide a certificate of insurance on request before work begins. Ask any tree company for theirs — if it doesn't arrive, that's your answer.
